A beautiful view of Špania Dolina, Slovakia. This 13th Century church sits gently above a 160 step climb overlooking the valley. Špania Dolina is a historic mining town known for eyelet lace and woven riečička coarse thread. If you're fortunate, you may find village women who will demonstrate this regional craft. One thing closely related to Easter is colored and decorated eggs. There are all kinds of ways and techniques of how to decorate Easter eggs. The scrape etching method is one of the most difficult techniques which is used chiefly in Slovacko, in south region of Moravia bordering Slovakia. Here you can find the best Easter egg makers...

More great tutorials from Lubos Brieda at www.slovakcooking.com...

Slovak Easter traditions are definitely quite unique! They basically consist of guys chasing girls around with switches weaved from willow branches and also pouring buckets of cold water on them. The girls then reward the guys with beautiful decorated Easter eggs, and other treats like home-made kolache and shots of slivovica, the East-European plum brandy.
Sišky or pampúchy (Slovak donuts) are commonly served during Slovak carnival or Mardi Gras celebrations. Here's a recipe from our friend, Lubos Brieda's Slovak cooking blog. It also includes the Slovak fairy tale (rozprávka) which tells the story of a small pampúch, pampúšik. Enjoy the story and recipe here: http://www.slovakcooking.com/2011/recipes/homemade-donuts-sisky/
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1511544924003367238.post-14202951537785603332012-02-09T10:48:00.001-05:002012-02-10T11:44:26.240-05:00Fasiangy (Media Links) - Goral Region in Slovakia
From the time of feast of the Three Kings until Ash Wednesday Slovaks celebrate the tradition of Fasiangy (similar to Mardi Gras and Carnival). Today's blog post begins a series of Fasiangy-related posts. The first is a Fasiangy video from Oľšavica, Slovakia which is about an hour south of Stará Ľubovňa near the Polish border.
