A beautiful view of Špania Dolina, Slovakia. This 13th Century church sits gently above a 160 step climb overlooking the valley. Špania Dolina is a historic mining town known for eyelet lace and woven riečička coarse thread. If you're fortunate, you may find village women who will demonstrate this regional craft. For more on Špania Dolina, see Milan Hlôška's story here. Slovak Easter Folk Art - Woven Willow Whips and Straw Eggs

More great tutorials from Lubos Brieda at www.slovakcooking.com...

Slovak Easter traditions are definitely quite unique! They basically consist of guys chasing girls around with switches weaved from willow branches and also pouring buckets of cold water on them. The girls then reward the guys with beautiful decorated Easter eggs, and other treats like home-made kolache and shots of slivovica, the East-European plum brandy.

Homemade Slovak Noodles

Keep it thin, floured and use a sharp knife!

Yesterday I journeyed back in time when our Babas (grandmothers) rose early to make sure the daily chores were done ....and here's one reason why, "to make homemade noodles." I now have an appreciation for their labor of love and would like to share this video which is closest to the recipe I used.

Interested in learning from the experts? Why not plan a Slovak cooking tour excursion? Contact us at SEEP sro for more details.

Here's another link to a Slovak cooking website for a variation of noodle recipe plus many more.

Levoca from the Basilica Hill

A picturesque, impressionist-like view looking down on the town of Levoca, Slovakia. The high steeple on the left is Sv. Jakub (St. James) which houses the famous wooden altar by Master Pavel. It was also my grandfather's church. The Basilica Hill from which the photo was taken houses a Marian shrine. A must-stop and see town when traveling cross country in Slovakia.
